...beautifully enacted literary cinema, with the thoughtful, subtle Maguire a perfectly Irvingesque 20th century hero.
The Cider House Rules is often absorbing or enchanting in its parts.
The rapport between Larch and Homer is the film's strongest point and provides its most provocative and humorous moment.
Maguire flawlessly captures the nuances of this character - there isn't a moment when we don't see Homer as worth an investment of time and sympathy.
The large ensemble cast (...) is, however, a whole other story. Caine (...) is particularly good here, as is Lindo in the difficult role ofan apparent moral paragon. But Theron's reckless, tormented ingenue is the real revelation...
